DARREN LEHMANN PENALISED FOR BREACHING AUSTRALIA’S CODE OF BEHAVIOR – CRICKET NEWS UPDATE

Darren Lehmann penalised for breaching Australia’s Code of behavior – Cricket News Update

Brisbane Heat’s coach, Darren Lehmann, has been suspended for two years and fined US$ 3000 after he publicly criticised Marlon Samuels’ bowling action, which was held to be in breach of Australia’s Code of Behaviour.

Lehmann was found guilty of breaching Rule 9 (Detrimental Public Comment) after he questioned the legitimacy of Marlon Samuels' bowling action following Heat’s loss against Melbourne Renegades last Saturday, at Docklands Stadium.

The 42-year-old was also penalised in his playing days, back in 2003, for breaching ICC’s racial vilification code, which resulted in a 5-ODI suspension.

Samuels, who went for just 18 runs in his 4 overs during the Big Bash League game, was reported for a suspect action back in 2008, during West Indies' tour to South Africa. The field umpires, Aleem Dar and Simon Taufel, reported suspicions over his action during that time. Consequently, the match referee Roshan Mahanama informed both ICC alongside West Indies team management about the issue. However, in 2011, ICC cleared Samuels following an independent Test.

This year, Samuels was again reported for a suspect action during the Indian Premier League in April by umpires Bruce Oxenford and Aleem Dar, during a game against Chennai Super Kings, after which he was not allowed to bowl in the tournament.

“I've spoken to the umpires about it,” Lehmann had said after the game. “I just want something done. He couldn't bowl in the IPL (Indian Premier League) last year, yet he can bowl in the BBL. We've got to seriously look at what we're doing. Are we here to play cricket properly or what? If he's deemed legal, I'm totally understanding of that. But from my point of view from 20 years' of cricket, I've got a problem with 120km/h off no steps,” shared Lehmann after Saturday’s BBL game.

The 31-year-old has the fourth best economy rate in this year’s BBL so far. Having 23 T20Is under his belt, Samuels has a bowling average of 27.61 (better than many front-line bowlers in T20s). A genuine all-rounder, Marlon Samuels is one of the most experienced players in the West Indian side.
